GENERATION Z – They are are born in the late 1990s and beyond. They are perpetually surrounded by iPhones, iPads, computers and the Internet. The “Gen Z” crowd is not to be belittled as they are incredibly tech savvy. With technology at their fingertips, it is difficult for them to resist picking up their phones to check out Instagram in the midst of completing their homework. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram seem so much more interesting to them when they are supposed to be buried in their books. However, it is possible to increase your child’s attention span! Here are 6 ways to increase their attention span.
#1 – Get Rid of Distractions
Keep those electronic gadgets away from your child when it is time for them to study, because the constant visual simulations can decrease their attention span. If they are doing computer work, a good way to remain focussed is to close all irrelevant tabs.
#2 – Comfortable Environment
A cluttered desk or room can greatly diminish your child’s productivity. File those worksheets away and arrange those stationery neatly using pencil holders. Ergonomic chairs, a bright room and a cool temperature can help create a comfortable environment for your child to focus. Such a conducive environment should keep your child from wanting to leave the room every 5 minutes in search of something else to do.
#3 – Appropriate Breaks
30 minutes of work followed by 20 minutes of web surfing as a break is ineffective studying. Research shows that the optimal time frame for studying is about 40 – 90 minutes, followed by a 10 minute break. Make sure that the breaks do not consist of too much use of electronic gadgets. A good break includes going out of the room to look at greenery or relaxing the mind with rest. This habit will help to stretch your child’s attention span and help them to focus better.
#4 – Doing One Thing At A Time
When multi-tasking, it seems that more can be accomplished within a shorter period of time. But this is actually a misconception. Multi-tasking not only reduces productivity but also leads to longer hours of studying for your child. Get your child to focus on one task at a time and avoid moving on to the next task before the current one is completed. They will find themselves becoming more focussed and less stressed.
#5 – Follow A Schedule
A schedule would help to increase your child’s attention span as it can remind them of what tasks are to be accomplished. The schedule could be a weekly plan personally drafted by them so that they take responsibility for completing the tasks. Don’t forget to paste this planner somewhere visible!
#6 – Rewards
All children love rewards. Reward them with some computer or TV time once they are done with their work for the day. These can serve as a motivation while they are studying and keep their attention span, so they will focus on their work in order to reap the rewards.
We hope these simple tips can help make your child’s study sessions more effective and productive!
